A boat that looks clean from the dock can still have mineral deposits and the early stages of gelcoat oxidation working across the hull.
Why Lake Travis Is Especially Hard on Boats
Lake Travis sits at around 650 feet of elevation, fully exposed to Central Texas sun. UV intensity at the surface of the water is significantly higher than on land because the water reflects and amplifies it. Combine that with the hard water characteristic of the Edwards Aquifer — which feeds into the Highland Lakes system — and you get mineral deposits that etch into gelcoat faster than most lake environments in the country.
The other factor is the wet-dry cycle. Boats that sit in slips at Lakeway Marina or at private docks along the shoreline cycle from lake spray to direct sun multiple times per day. That cycle accelerates mineral bonding, chalking on vinyl, and mold growth inside the cabin. A boat that sits through a full Austin summer without attention will often need correction work, not just washing, by fall.
What a Marine Detail Actually Covers
A proper marine detail is not the same process as washing a car. Hull and topsides get a dedicated wash, then we move through water spot and mineral deposit removal using appropriate lake-water-specific treatments. Vinyl surfaces — seats, cushions, trim — get cleaned, conditioned, and protected against UV-driven cracking, which is one of the most expensive repairs on a lake boat. Canvas gets spot-treated. Interior surfaces get a full wipe-down, vacuum, and UV protectant.
Gelcoat oxidation is assessed on every boat we see. Light oxidation responds well to a one-step compound and polish. Severe oxidation may need a two-step process before any wax or ceramic protection makes sense. The hull below the waterline is evaluated for algae and growth if the boat spends extended time in the slip.
How Per-Foot Pricing Works
Marine detailing is priced per linear foot because boat size varies far more than car size. A 20-foot ski boat and a 35-foot cruiser are not the same job. Our pricing scales accordingly: a Mini Boat Detail starts at $6/ft, a Basic Boat Detail at $16/ft, and a Full Boat Detail at $24/ft. A 24-foot boat at the Full Detail rate starts at $576. Correction work is quoted separately based on condition.
